    CHID International is sponsoring summer 06 programs to:

    Vietnam
    Chiapas, Mexico

  Chiapas, Mexico, Summer 2006
  Post-Modern Maya
  Program dates: June 19, 2006 - July 07, 2006 -- 12 Credits

  Program Description
  After a quarter of preparatory work in the spring, the Program will spend=
 three weeks in San Crist=F3bal de las Casas, a beautiful Colonial city in =
the mountains of Chiapas that serves as the capital of Mayan Chiapas, and t=
hat was named for both St. Christopher, the Catholic patron saint of travel=
ers, and Fray Bartolom=E9 de las Casas, the first liberation theologist and=
 activist for indigenous rights in the Americas.
  Students will make their own arrangements for travel to Mexico City (by a=
ir) and from there to Tuxtla Guti=E9rrez, Chiapas (by air or bus).
  They will be placed individually with Mexican families, with whom they wi=
ll take two meals a day--breakfast and the afternoon meal or comida.
  This program is open to students from all backgrounds. All students are e=
ncouraged to apply.

  Vietnam, Summer 2006
  Alternative Modernities
  Program dates: June 18, 2006 - July 26, 2006 -- 12 Credits

  Program Description
  The Vietnam program is composed of three courses: two seminars and one la=
nguage course. This program is especially well fitted to the needs of Asian=
 and International Studies majors but also meets the needs and requirements=
 of several other majors at UW.
  In addition to the coursework, students will participate in numerous excu=
rsions. The excursions include visiting various locations near Hanoi (where=
 students will reside when not on excursions), the northern, mountainous re=
gion of Sapa (home to many ethnic minority communities), the historic town =
of Hoi An in central Vietnam and the southern metropolitan area of Saigon
  The program fee is $3500 per student. This includes tuition, lodging, wel=
coming and departure dinners, guest speakers, classrooms, many reading mate=
rials and excursions. Students will be required to pay for other items such=
 many of their meals which are inexpensive in Vietnam, communications (e.g.=
, telephone calls or email), transportation to and from Vietnam, some readi=
ng materials, and incidentals.
  Finally, a two-credit, weekly pre-departure seminar will be required in t=
he Spring 06 (CHID 496). This seminar will provide basic background informa=
tion on Vietnam, orient students to the academic expectations of the progra=
m, and allow the group to get to know one another.
  This program is open to students from all backgrounds.

  Rome, Italy, Summer 2006
  Roma Eterna
  Program dates: To be announced -- 12 Credits

  Program Description
  The Comparative History of Ideas program at the University of Washington =
will offer a nine-week, concentrated study abroad program this summer, allo=
wing students to explore the rich historical and cultural legacy of the cit=
y of Rome.
  This program is designed for both students and community members.
  The Summer Rome program is intended to offer the first-time visitor to Ro=
me a study opportunity that combines tours of its prominent historical site=
s, together with a focused inquiry into its multiple layers of historical s=
ignificance. Classes will be held in the UW Rome Center, in the cities hist=
oric Palazzo Pio.
  This program is open to students from all backgrounds. All students are e=
ncouraged to apply.
