STUDY LOCAL DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL CHANGE IN ECUADOR
SPRING QUARTER 2006

Local Development & Social Change in Ecuador with CIMAS
and
Community Development Internships in Ecuador
CIMAS offers students the opportunity to explore and explain the dynamics of
today's dilemmas associated with local development. The program will challenge
students to critically reflect on notions of modernity and development in
relation to local worldviews and culture. Theoretical background is augmented
with experiential work involving practical community-based efforts to provide
alternatives that address issues and values of social justice, human rights,
individual and community empowerment, sustainability and environmental
stewardship.
Field Research Component – Three, week-long field research trips. Students
integrate research and analysis of macro forces with community-building
responses and alternatives. Field locations include Pedro Moncayo (Pichincha Province), Muisne (Esmeraldas Province) and Cotacachi (Imbabura Province). Neighborhood initiatives in Quito and those by national or regional organizations such as the indigenous rights movement will also be explored.
Other Program Highlights:
-Full ten-week quarter of study. Based in Quito, Ecuador, the program also includes three, week-long field studies in other regions of the country.
-Explore solutions based on participatory processes, linking local
governments, community organizations, and NGOs together in the search for
alternatives to meet the needs of local communities.
-Develop research projects in alternative development.
-Study intensive Spanish language.
-Homestay family and field research accommodations, meals, and all in-country
travel included.
-Optional quarter-long internship in alternative development settings
following successful completion of the program.
Requirements: Minimum of three quarters college-level Spanish language or the
equivalent.
2006 Program Costs:
Spring Quarter Local Development Program: $5,650
Summer Quarter Optional Internship: $3,650

Fundación CIMAS del Ecuador (CIMAS) is a private, nonprofit organization
committed to the study of Ecuador’s environment, economic development and
health issues. It is their mission to provide opportunities for individuals,
groups and communities to explore their potential and to design alternative
models of local development that consider environmental, social and cultural
differences. Through academic programs, research and community service, CIMAS
works to formulate responses to problems confronting Ecuador’s society and in
particular to some of its poorest citizens.
