SUMMER POSITION AT USGS IN TACOMA

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Washington Water Science Center in
Tacoma, Washington is seeking a student that is working towards a 2- or
4-year undergraduate degree for a hydrologic technician position in the
stream gaging program. The position will be full time during the summer of
2007 with a potential to continue as part-time during the school year
(12-15 hours per week).

The student will assist with all duties associated with the operation of
more than 125 stream, lake, and reservoir gages in Western Washington
under the supervision of the Tacoma Field Office Chief and senior
hydrologic technicians. Primary duties include assisting with hydrologic
data collection in the field; assisting with the maintenance,
construction, and repair of gaging stations; and processing and filing
data in an office setting. The student may also be asked to perform a
combination of the following duties:

-       Use a variety of hand and power tools to prepare sites for stream
gage installation. This includes assisting with digging holes
           or trenches, using chain saws, pouring concrete, and basic
carpentry.
-       Pack or carry heavy equipment in to remote field stations
-       Enter, manipulate, edit and retrieve data using USGS databases and
Excel spreadsheets.
-       Help summarize and analyze data using standard software.
-       Organize data in an established filing system.
-       Prepare for and participate in field sampling trips.

There may be opportunities to perform other duties commensurate with the
skills and interests of the student. The position will require periods of
sitting in the office and may include considerable walking, lifting,
bending, climbing, and stream wading to collect data while in the field.
Applicants must be able to swim and must have a valid driver?s license and
good driving record.

The position title will be Hydrologic Technician (student temporary) and
the grade-level/pay for the position will depend on the education level
and experience of the student. Work-study students are encouraged to
apply. We expect to hire at the GS-3 or GS-4 level ($11.59-$13.01 per
hour). The position does not include benefits. Student temporary positions
require that the students be in school and registered for at least
half-time enrollment, as defined by the educational institution.
