*Volunteer Tutors Needed*
Math and science tutors are needed to assist girls ages eight through
seventeen, as part of the Girl Scouts Beyond Bars Program. The program,
which allows incarcerated moms to engage in healthy activities with their
daughters, is a collaboration between the Girl Scouts and the Washington
Center for Corrections for Women. It's a national model geared toward
providing "high risk" girls with a pro-social support system during their
mom's incarceration.
Children of incarcerated parents are in the highest risk bracket for teen
pregnancy, drug use, and some form of incarceration themselves. Girl Scouts
provides education and resources, not only to the children but to the
offenders, to help them deal with their issues in a positive manner, thus
hopefully breaking down the cycle.
Tutors are asked to commit to at least one evening a month to help these
girls improve their understanding of math and science, and in turn, improve
their grades and chances of going to college.
At Girl Scouts we know that given the opportunity, every girl can become a
leader with the courage to act on her values, develop the ability to make
clear decisions, and acquire the self confidence to make a difference in the
world around her. Girl Scouts helps girls grow courageous and strong through
girl-driven programs, reflecting the ever-changing needs and interests of
girls. This opportunity is open to female volunteers, but interested males
should contact the Boy Scouts Beyond Bars Program at
