Thanks for the suggestion Eduardo...

Trouble is that causes alpine to assume I do want to automatically read
the next thread and therefore it won't ask. What I need for it to do is
to assume that I NEVER want to be moved to the next thread unless I used
tab to find the next new...

If I'm not expressly looking for NEW messages than I'm most often
scrolling up and down the index looking for a particular one that I've
seen before... What I want is to be able to do is to simply switch from
the down arrow to the up arrow (or vice/versa) and not have to escape
from something that wants to change my thread...

If I wasn't in a threaded view and it was the end of a folder I'd get:

[No more messages. Press TAB for next folder.]

So I guess that what I'd like to get is:

[No more messages. Press TAB for next thread.]
