[Alpine-info] Linux version on two machines with IMAP and GMail

Here is a question relayed from my brother, who isn't on the list, but who
is dealing with a situation I will probably face in the next day or so.
He has Alpine 0.99 with IMAP freshly installed on two different Linux
boxes, running Ubuntu Gutsy. He, as I, prefers to use a GMail address,
and we're trying IMAP for the first time after using POP for a long time.
One box seemingly reads the mail fine.
The other one, set up so far as he knows identical to the first, is
telling him he has no mail on that same GMail account.
He speculates this is due to some IMAP setting that is perhaps marking
everything already "read" so the second box isn't seeing it. I really
have no idea myself, and he could better explain the problem if he could
break away himself now, but he's an FAA geek and is up to his armpits
fixing navigational equipment for jetliners now.
I myself have not yet been able to get Alpine running on my Linux box at
home, period, much less with two boxes. But I hope I'll figure it out.
The Linux setup seems different from this Windows version.
