If you want to set the gmail inbox up as your alpine inbox go to 
Setup/Config screen and move down a couple lines to Inbox Path. Type the C 
(Change) command and enter something like this for the server

   imap.gmail.com/user=your_address at gmail.com/ssl

and

   inbox

for the name of the folder. That's what works for me, anyway.
