[Alpine-info] Missing '+' indicator at left edge of screen?

Is there a difference between the windoze version of Alpine and the Linux 
version?

I'm running 1.00 in both cases.  But with the windoze version, I see that 
the '+' is present for the appropriate mail at the far left of the message 
screen, indicating the message is for me alone and not for a list.

However, the same mail displays WITHOUT the '+' sign in my Linux install 
at home, which I compiled and built a few days ago on Ubuntu Gutsy.

I am pretty sure this is not a problem with screen real estate or display 
settings.  There's room at the left for the '+' sign; it's simply not 
there.

Any ideas about what's wrong and how to fix it?
