Thanks for clarifying the cause of the behavior. I can understand the
functionality of wanting to limit the search to what information is
displayed in the index, along with having separate commands to select a
group of email messages that match different criteria.
What I don't understand is: What's the logical purpose of having the
convenient quick search (^W) on the index limited to what is displayed in
the fixed column width? What functionality would be lost if instead ^W
searched the full entry for each email according to the information
displayed? If I'm composing a message, and I have text that wraps off the
screen so that I can't see it, I still expect ^W to find it, and take me
there. And it does so; it doesn't only match words that fit within the 80,
90, whatever width of my terminal.
I appreciate the suggestions for how to select against text to display a
range of messages that I then need to unselect to get the index, and this
is useful functionality. But that's not the functionality I was asking
about. The current implementation of ^W in index seems to be a bit goofy.
Other people may not use ^W this way; that's fine. This is a feature
request (have ^W search the full strings in the displayed entries) and not
a bug report; --d
