I believe auto-zoom is a relatively new feature. Zoom is not.

The thing that looks like a bug is treating all-messages-selected the same
as being in zoom mode, even though it's not. I don't think the auto-zoom
behavior in general looks like a bug. (e.g. if you search for all messages
from me in your inbox, it seems pretty intuitive.)
