I think auto-zoom triggers on all(?) selections that use ';' for
selecting, whether it's the initial selection or a refinement (narrow or
broaden).

e.g. ';' 'n' 100-200<CR> to select 100-200 by number

or (with messages already selected, but not in zoomed mode):
';' 'n' 'n' 110-120<CR> to 'n'arrow the selection by 'n'umber

And, as far as I'm aware, the topic of this conversation (unselect by ':'
triggers zoom when all messages are selected) is the only time
':'-selection auto-zooms.
