I don't even think it should be an option. Let people hit 'z'.

This is a completely separate issue from the behavior of ":" described
above, and I don't agree with your thinking on this. If a new user does a
search for a few messages in a big index, he usually won't see any of the
selected messages -- where are they? With autozoom, he sees them.

On this point I think you are right. This can easily be improved. I just
did a search that selected two messages. After hitting 'z' to zoom I see
this at the bottom of the screen:
[In Zoomed Index of 2 messages. Use "Z" to restore regular Index]
That is helpful, but I had just used "Z" so I at least knew something
about the zoom feature. Strangely, if I do the search again with
auto-zoom turned on, this is all I see at the bottom of the screen:
[Select matched 2 messages!]
If I didn't know about auto-zoom, I might not realize that I am in a
zoomed index. I think something like this would be a better choice after
auto-zoom:
[Zoomed Index of 2 selected messages. Use "Z" to restore regular Index]
