It might not work for you, but what I've been doing for years is not 
automatically including the .sig.  I have a ~/.sig file and when I want to 
include it, I position my cursor where I want it, then type Ctrl-r .sig, 
which takes less than two seconds.

The first line of .sig is "-- " (without the quotes, of course).
