You could let sendmail or postfix deliver the mail as usual. If you create
a file ~/INBOX in mbx format, then alpine will transfer the mail from the
traditional inbox to the inbox in mbx format in your home directory. I do
so with the IMAP server, and it works without any problem.
You gain the speed and better features of mbx format without having to
change the MTA. The same applies for the mix format, which I have not yet
tested.
