[Alpine-info] spellchecker not remembering

I'm running 1.10 on a remote machine (which seems to be running
RHEL5), set to run ispell before sending. It happens often -- half a
dozen to a dozen times per message -- that I tell it to add something;
and I'm getting the distinct impression, despite my inveterate absent-
mindedness, that I've told it several times to add certain words.
What could be wrong? I tried deleting ispell from the
configuration, letting it pick its default, and now it flashes an error
message without checking at all.
