The amount of time it takes Alpine to ask this questions depends on
certain factors. As you can see from the message that Alpine displayed,
Alpine communicated successfully with the server, but it is waiting for a
reply. When this happens, Alpine is in listening mode, waiting to read the
reply from the server. This could happen if the connection is slow, or if
the server is slow (for example, you are performing a search in the
server, and this takes a long time) or probably for other reasons.

In this case, what you need to do to minimize this delay is to take a look
at the configuration options

TCP Read Warning Timeout
TCP Query Timeout

If you set this to a small value, then for operations that take long to
complete you will receive the prompt, even though there is nothing wrong
with the connection. I set it to 20, and most times I wish I set it for
something smaller, but don't want to be bothered by slow operations either
(I had set it to 15, but due to this I had to revert to 20). Experiment
and see what works for you.

The above options are available from the configuration screen, only after
you enable

[X] Expose Hidden Config

I hope this helps to alleviate this inconvenience
