To make gmail IMAP behave better (though still not compliant):

- Open gmail in your browser, click "Settings" and then the "Labs" tab.

- Scroll down to the "Advanced IMAP Controls" category and enable it.

- Click the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab and change the now available 
settings to something more sane (don't remember if you to relogin for this 
to show up).
