Exactly.  Our freedoms at universities all over America have been severely 
restricted in recent years.  The reason, they say, is security.  I could 
ask why they think my web server is insecure after I've run it for 12 
years without a single security problem, but I know their answer: "talk to 
the hand!"

I thank the real reason has to do with money.  Part of that is that it 
costs a little more to test security of systems that run services.  Part 
is the influence of software industry lobbyists on university IT policies. 
I don't see it first hand, but I can kinda guess what's going on.
