I am old enough, but cannot claim much IT knowledge of the late
1970s. So not aware or sure of your references. Anyway, from what
I think I know, to read the rest of your thoughts on this would be
very interesting I am sure.

However, For all concerned in ref to the topic of this thread -
being stuck with gmail servers (or any bum servers)...

I must wonder why not setup with a service like fastmail.fm - use
their facility to essentially take mail from the bum servers to
fastmail.fm IMAP servers? From that point it is easy! Pine/Alpine
interfaces well with fastmail.fm (or even vfemail.net) IMAP servers.
I use both of those email systems servers & see no real problems so
far. But I use them not in the manner I just suggested - nor posses
gmail experience either; I avoid gmail (even though it is provided
free with the ISP access I use). I might sign up for gmail just to
try out my suggestion - a test. But then again, I am not inside a
university system. Does that matter? Any difference?

Is there a better way for users stuck with bum servers, like the
university setups I read about, in some manner, to avoid bum servers
directly & make this handoff, then use Pine/Alpine on a good set of
IMAP servers?

Is there a problem taking mail from bum servers to fastmail.fm
servers, processing the mail as needed, then sending mail from
fastmail.fm back into any universities mail system for some users?
Is there a lockout problem?

Is there something I am missing with this university email lockup to
gmail? A hijinks technically for other IMAP servers or Pine/Alpine?

* On the side - the Scroogle Scraper seems to work well too!
