[Alpine-info] Saving messages is incredibly slow in 1.10

Hi,
I've recently moved fom Pine 4.64 to Alpine 1.10. I'm on a Debian 4.0
machine, and 1.10 is the latest version in the Debian package system; 2.00
hasn't arrived yet.
I see lots of little improvements, which i like, but one huge regression:
saving messages can be incredibly slow - up to 30 seconds. This happens
when saving messages from my inbox to any other folder, or when saving to
sent-messages on sending. It doesn't happen every time: it seems to be
more likely on the first use of the destination mailbox, or if it hasn't
been used recently. When it's not super-slow, it takes a couple of seconds
- still slower than the sub-second time Pine takes.
My mail all lives in local mbox-format files, some of which are largeish -
my inbox is 87215037 bytes, sent-mail is 46697116, and my two main
saved-messages files are 262658667 and 126558198.
Any idea what might be causing this, and how i might resolve it?
Thanks,
tom
