Loose Ends Dept. : I asked my contact at the hosting firm. It
seems they run oodles & kaboodles of virtualized stuff -- and do it with
software from Parallel (which, coincidentally, I hear is now available to
Ubuntu -- but not to Fedora, afaik, at least via repository); and
Parallel, apparently, is in origin a Russian outfit.

So that MSK that I spotted does make sense -- and does not in
fact have Thing One to do with the problem that began this thread...
