You probably have checkfor new mail enabled. In that case Alpine tries to 
figure out how many new messages there are in the folder, but the server 
does not allow you to get that number without opening the folder.

Try adding the /ssl flag, so make it

{pop3.virginmedia.com/pop3/ssl/user=jamescharles at virginmedia.eu}
