I probably forgot the reason earlier in this branched thread... but if 
alpine works for you, why switch just for the sake of switching?

or is there some actual bug in alpine or huge feature that Thunderbird *HAS*
that you need?  If alpine doesn't do what you want, but you're used to it,
and the other mail program *doesn't*, then I don't see why you'd switch now.
