No, I posted that an no one came up with a solution.  There were a few 
people contemplating the problem though.

I put up with it for awhile, and it wasn't all that bad -- fairly rare and 
I could recover composed messages from the ~/#pico*# file.  So I kept on 
using Alpine on Solaris despite the "alarm clock" crashes.

(Now I am happily using Ubuntu instead and I dumped the old Solaris box -- 
a once-upon-a-time $10K machine now essentially worthless.  I know that 
doesn't help you much!)
