Mark has been very definite about this -- he says there is no solution 
that will work universally -- so maybe Mark should be giving us just one 
example of how one kind of fix will fail with another setup.  That is, he 
should show us two terminal/font/whatever systems where there is no way to 
make Alpine work for both of them.  He must know the answer to this or he 
couldn't be as confident as he is.
