ah yes ... but I'm used to run alpine "in its own window" (alias of the
sort "urxvt -e script running alpine").
I wonder (assuming there is still an alpine development team) if it would
make sense to have a native X application embedding alpine ... sort of
PC-Pine, or the sort of thing the Hessling Editor
(http://hessling-editor.sourceforge.net/) does. There is "the" running in
whatever terminal/shell, and "xthe" running in its own window.
Curiously enough I use xthe as my preferred editor, but use the as
alternate editor from within alpine (in the same (u)rxvt)
