While I have submitted the problem as a bug to launchpad, I doubt whether
the priority is going to be very high - so perhaps someone on this list
has a suggestion meanwhile:-) (I hope this is not against any rules?)
Here is the acknowledgement of the bug report with some details then known
to me.

Here are some more details.
The default configuration, which does not work, is: /usr/bin/aspell
--dont-backup --mode email-check
I tried changing it to: aspell -c, /usr/bin/aspell -c
--dont-backup --mode email-check. It still does not work - still the same
return from alpine as before.
"aspell -c <file>" on the cl works.
The dictionaries aspell-en and aspell-de are installed. However, I only
installed the German dict. recently, after experimenting with only the
English version. No change either way.
aspell is indeed installed in /usr/bin.
Any ideas as to what else I could try? Where I could look to find out more
There does not seem to be any log for alpine (pine), nor is there anythin
in /var/mail or /var/log on alpine.
Regards
Luise
