The INBOX is always a stay open folder and that seems to be the problem, 
if you close and open the folder again then you see the updates. eXpunge 
or Ctrl+L do not help either.

Eduardo suggested I make the INBOX an incoming folder instead which will 
close the folder when I leave it, so at least there would be a way to 
force a folder re-open, which I don't know how to do otherwise if the 
INBOX is a stay open folder.
