All of your suggestions are good suggestions.  I think I'm going just use 
Getmail to get the mail and save it locally.  It's just that I have Pine 
working now and I was hoping there was one little configuration flag that 
I missed to solve this problem.  Since there's not, I'm gonna fight with 
Getmail.
