That sounds cool. This isn't what you are looking for, but my approach is
to use Xvnc. I run it with the localhost option to block connections from
the usual ports, then just connect via ssh with port forwarding. I have a
little script for that to make it super easy. Then I run IceWM within the
VNC session with an xterm for Alpine and Firefox in a different workspace.
Whenever I open a URL, it appears in a new tab in Firefox and the system
automatically switches me to the Firefox workspace.

I like this system because it is totally portable. I access it
practically from anywhere -- home, office, etc.
