[Alpine-info] frequent connection reset on Ubuntu

I'm running Alpine v. 2.00 on Ubuntu 10.04.1 (2.6.32-26-server) over an ssh
and things are generally going smoothly. But I find that the connection is
frequently dropped with the message "connection reset by peer" when Alpine
is accessing the Inbox.
Alpine is accessing the gmail smtp server. Resets of this kind are rare with
any other application open on the ssh connection, and when Alpine is run
directly on the server itself, it seems quite stable, and is rarely closed
out of the gmail server. That last fact makes me think that the connection
reset is not simply the result of the inbox closing.
I tried adding "ServerAliveInterval" and "ServerAliveCountMax" lines to
ssh_config, but it seems to have no obvious effect.
Can anyone suggest reasons for the instability of the connection, or
possible fixes? I posted a question about this problem to the main Ubuntu
discussion forum a week ago, but there has been no reply. I imagine the
alpine-info list is a better place to talk about it.
Thanks!
