Wow, I'm very glad I put a disclaimer warning of inaccuracies on my message!
Lot's more corrections/clarifications than I expected :-)

I knew that acronym wasn't right (POP, IMAP, NNTP, ESMTP), but it was 3am,
and I saw it on some page I ran into at the time, so I just pasted it. Poor
excuse, but oh well. Thanks everyone for all the corrections :-)
