First, you need to get rid of a misconception. Alpine does not sort.
Alpine *groups* messages according to some rules. In the case of
threading, the two messages above have the same "base subject" (remove the
Fwd: string from the second message, you get the same subject as in the
first message).
This follows the rules of RFC 5259. You need to contact either Mark
Crispin IMAP+SORT+THREAD at Lingling.Panda.COM or Kent Munchison
murch at andrew.cmu.edu to explain to them that their algorithm does not
produce the expected results. If they change the algorithm, then a change
in Alpine will have to be done to account for this.
