What i thought was happening was that it was retrieving headers each
time i opened Alpine. I did the following which seems to have done
'the trick'.

Main menu--Configuration--[Advanced user's preferences section] marked
[ ] Save will not delete.

Further down in the configuration file under Pruning rule
marked [ ] Don't rename, don't delete
Exit setup and 'yes' to save settings

Grateful if someone could confirm/advise on these steps.
