I think we need a FAQ page, or do we already have one?
There was a pretty extensive discussion of this issue a couple of years
ago, or so. It took me forever to figure out my problems. It turned out
that I needed the right Alpine settings, the right system settings, the
right terminal and the right fonts.
One of my first big mistakes was using rxvt instead of urxvt -- I could
never succeed with rxvt no matter what I changed on the system, but I had
no idea about that until someone here told me. The benefit of rxvt was
supposed to be that it used less memory than xterm, but I did some
comparisons and wasn't finding a difference, or maybe xterm was actually
doing better on memory than urxvt. Anyway, I've been using xterm on
Ubuntu and it has been fine.
