esther,
back when i lived in buffalo, and had a long snow icy winter, i used to keep
a baggie of cat litter in my pocket. if i were walking on ice, i would
sprinkle it ahead of y steps. time consuming? yes, but it worked.
better then investing in crampons...lol, if it only happens every few yrs.
this, btw is also good for traction under your tires, incase... i always
carried a bag in my trunk...
:)

Generally I find the ice crampons you mention *much* more dangerous for the
average person to wear - on black ice they tend to act more like ice skates
than a traction aid and very few attach securely. Much safer to wear good
soled boots. If you are just facing a mixture of some ice and snow, there
are slip-on "rubbers" that the sport of curling has. They use them when on
the ice, but not wanting to slide.
