Where is ACA?

AMP-L subscribers,
The Barr Foundation and United Amputee Services Association (BUAAF) were pleased to fund George Velasquez's new prosthetic leg thru Elmer Speelman, of Cape Fear O&P. George has provided tremendous inspiration to so many amputees and will perhaps, help us explore these issues with ACA.

I will forward his eloquent thank you to members of this list if you request it. I have also cc him this message in an attempt to recruit his help in participating in this group discussion. Perhaps, since he is a prime example of an high profile amputee with no coverage, he may want to help request that ACA develop new focus on advocacy issues to help all Americans, like George, obtain affordable prosthetic coverage. If you know George or of his commitment to helping amputees, please drop him a e-mail.

Since I have recieved no response for two weeks from Mr.Miller or Mr.Ising, I will write the ACA's accountant tomorrow (address below) to request a annual report from them as a member of the ACA organization. Perhaps others on the list would like to do the same. This is a fact finding mission and as long as we are persistent and non accusatory, we can retrieve answers and hopefully, develop a new commitment by ACA to address amputee advocacy issues.

By the way friends, this is personal to me as well for I have been excluded from further prosthetic coverage. Its going to get worse before it gets better and happen to all of us if we dont do something about it!

Happy Fourth of July and let the fireworks begin!!

The past few days have shown just a few examples of why I raise questions about ACA. Pat's being shunned and offered in essence no assistance or advice in his legal situation, Sharon’s agreement that she was not consulted about having HER name posted amid the list of members in First Step's recent issue. This meeting has taken on the same form as a similar effort before and during last year's convention where George Velasquez's leg was concerned. Privately discussions took place to where someone in ACA was going to arrange for GV to get a leg and arrangements were in the works between he and this person. Next thing we know, there is a huge presentation and big deal made at the closing ceremony announcing this (which GV was not informed about before hand). THEN, he was told everything was a "go" and made his reservations, and then........he was told "no." He had no insurance, so they couldn't help!? This was all to make ACA look good at the closing ceremony because EVERYONE knew he had no insurance.

      StacEEEEy

      Mr. Miller's letter:

      Dear Ms. Asby;
I understand that you believe you have evidence of inappropriate ACA spending using grant monies. I hope you will be interested in your duty to make certain that the information is made available for appropriate action.

I would appreciate the opportunity to look at and address the issue. However, if you would feel more comfortable, i would suggest you send the information to Mr. Mike Parton, the independent CPA who audits both the ACA and the ACA grant expenditures. Mr. Parton's address is:
      Mike Parton
      Coulter & Justus PC
900 South Gay Street Suite 700
      Knoxville, TN 37902

I look forward to someone with authority over the ACA reviewing your information, because I would not want any impropriety or appearance of impropriety to remain un-addressed.

      Sincerely,
      John Miller
      President and CEO
