I can't agree with your first statement:

I feel that, far too often these days we fail to take responsibility for 
our own actions, instead blaming every bad act upon our 
upbringing.  However Your second phrase:

"As adults we are truly condemned to anguish if we cannot search out and
>eradicate, overcome those strictures to possession of ourselves. "

Might be rephrased to simply strive to improve ourselves as best we can?
