Thanks for the input and informal vote.
The Ertl is an amputation procedure where the distal ends of the Tibia
and Fibula are linked by a bone bridge. This results in the ability to
increase the amount of distal weight bearing on the stump and may make
for a more stable shape. It can be combined with a second technique that
connects the muscles on the front and back of the stump in order to have
them pull against each other and thereby prevent muscle wasting.
Ertl advocates believe that the procedure results in a stump that is
more functional and easier to fit well into a prosthesis. After doing my
own research, I tend to believe their claims that it is superior to the
more common amputation procedures.
Yes, for the inquiring minds that have to know, it was Dr. Jan Ertl that
recommended that I consider bilateral Ertls in one operation.
As all of us on the list know, it is in our interest to become the most
informed "consumers" that we can be. Surgeons come with their own
biases, as we all do. Hence my request to the group for their opinions.
As an extrovert, I like to try out ideas out loud. Even if "out loud"
happens to be with a typewriter.
Thank you to all for your thoughts. The decision is still a few weeks
away, and I will keep you informed.
Currently I am leaning (so to say) on one Ertl at a time. Seems to
decrease the risk and allow the use of my "good" prosthesis as I relearn
all the fun stuff with a new BK. Not to mention that relying on wheeling
full time is a little tough with a hand that also got a little scuffed
up during the accident too....
It's all one adventure after another.
