Hi Greg,
I think you have the right group - there are a lot of resources here. I just had
my first year anniversary as an AK amputee and am on a similar route as you.
I'm trying to get my life back to normal and back into the sports activities that
I've always enjoyed. This includes motorcycles and many water sports as well
as downhill skiing.
I don't know if you've ever watched paralympic downhill skiing but it's
amazing - one announcer was saying that he more often than not could not tell
which leg was amputated on BKA downhillers. In addition to sports, keeping
up a large two story house, and building PC's, I've been driving a standard
transmission 300ZX just lately (I was getting tired of the truck with it's
automatic). Some of these things are a little more difficult for an AKA than a
BKA but if you want to do something you'll find a way to do it.
In addition to bicycling, what kind of activities do you enjoy? I continually do
research on prosthetics and workarounds for various roadblocks and am
constantly finding reason for encouragement. I recently purchased a
waterproof knee and have ordered a swiveling ankle that will help with
swimming and snorkling (allows for swim fins in the proper position}.
Come back with some details of what you want to do for yourself.
