Hi Duncan,

Are you in New Zealand? I am leaving tomorrow for Queensland or Queenstown. (why both names?) Can you tell me what the weather is like? I'm going for the World Triathlon Championships.

Thanks

Lindsay

  Hi Sue
This is a difficult question. I initially was issused a permit for one year only with the comment from the doc being that I wouldn't need it after that. I wanted ask him how he could predict what I would need in a year, especially since he was a AB, but couldn't be bothered with the b---s--t. When it came up for renewal I just found a more realistic doc. I don't know how your permits work, but over here we can park in HC parks as as in timed parkspaces in town for 90 mins or double the time limit, which ever is greater. Up in Queensland, they have a two tiered system - 'chair users get a red permit and can use all HC parks, while my blue permmit allows me to only use blue spaces. A good way to ensure that wheelies don't miss out. Up there they also have spaces for Mums with babies in strollers in the shopping centres!!
However as an active amputee I only use the spaces on rare occasions, and I think that this is really the issue - relatively active amputees like myself should make sure that we think "do I really need to park here?" before we park. If you feel that you do, then go ahead and use it without any feelings of guilt. Permits are one of the few 'advantages' of an amputation and no one should feel lesser for using theirs

I hope all you Americans are enjoying your Thanksgiving Day
  Duncan

    Hi:
Do you guys think that everyone who is an amputee should be able to be issued a handicap parking permit.
I know there is rules..... how far you are able to walk. In Ontario Canada are rules state that the applicant must be unable to walk without assistance for more than 218 yards in eight minutes or less without great difficulty or danger to his or her health or safety.

My husband Rob has been BKA since Aug 99. He was issued a disable parking permit for 1 year after the amputation. But, is unable to get another one issued because I guess the doctor feels he is too good!!!!!

I was just curious on everyone's thoughts.
    Thanks
