another amputation level

I still have the symes. I had a chopart first, but some of the bone was exposed (which makes it die) and so I had to have it revised to a symes.

Why did you change to a higher level of amputation? What can you do now that you couldn't do with a Symes?

I have had a symes for five years, and yes, that's a good explanation. I think a chopart is half of the foot. that's what I had before the symes.

Symes is the word you're looking for I think. My understanding of this is that it is basically an ankle disarticulation with the heal pad placed under there so you can bear weight on the remaining top part of the ankle joint. I could be wrong about this, but I know one lady that has this type of amputation and is very successful with it.

I have never heard of a chopart amputation.

Hi everyone. I'm new to the group and I have a question. I have a chopart amputation (barely have my heel left) and I am having a lot of problems with this level since I was first amputated. I have a constant sprain and the bones in my foot that were cut always rub against my prosthesis and cause extreme pain. My prosthetist suggested that a Siams/Siems (sp?) amputation would possibly get rid of this problem. They would remove about 2 inches off the bottom of my heel just under my ankle. Is anyone else out there experiencing lots of difficulties with their chopart amputation? Everyone tells me that it's a difficult level. Does anyone have a Siams/Siems amputation and is doing well with it or having problems? My prosthetist said that people with a Siems amputation seem to do a lot better than the level I have. Any input? Belinda
