By all means, have your spouse go in with you. You BOTH get to hear what's being said, and can confer on what decisions to make. If they insist that spouse stay outside, I would take that as a real red flag -- it would lower my confidence in the provider.
Yeah. If they brush you off and refuse to listen carefully to you - it's time to shop for another provider who will.
As for the little child who called out "That daddy's different", it is just her natural curiosity. Self-conscious parents are all too quick to yank their kids back. Try to assure the parents that this curiosity is good and that you're OK with it. Hopefully, the kids will gain a better appreciation for people with differences. It's not just limb-loss. But it may be the first time a child sees someone of a different race or with unusual ethnic clothing, or tattoos, or whatever.
The more a child explores his/her world, the wider their horizons become.
Haven't we all been curious??
