Hi
I have been an amputee for 5 years. I have tried to develop a philosophy about how society views my difference. I am a DBKA I never cover my legs. They have no cosmetic covers and I always wear shorts or a skirt. So my "disability" is obvious. The reaction from the majority of people is positive.
People are only temporarily able bodied (TAB). Some sort of disability will affect every one of us unless we die a trumatic death at a young age. I know that the majority of people who do not know me identify me as an amputee this I expect. I hope that exposing my "disability" will help other people with disabilities feel in some way that they do not have to hide or be ashamed. I am not a soldier but when people ask me about my amputations I remind them of the soldiers returning from Iraq with limb loss and the extreme sacrifice they have made.
Theresa
