Getting on an airplane as an amputee only became complicated somewhat recently.

Years before 9-11-2001, I sometimes walked thru metal detectors at
airports without setting them off. It was always an adventure to
wonder how sensitive this detector was set, and whether it would
detect my leg.

At least now the procedure is more uniform at every airport in the
U.S. And I don't have to explain what an artificial leg is to the
security person.
