Raymond Rivers has a new cause - founding an education and support
center for amputees in Elizabeth City.
Rivers, himself a double amputee since early this year, is starting
the Raymond Rivers Resource Center for Amputees. A fundraiser for the
embryonic organization is being held Sept. 3 at Olive Branch
Missionary Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m.
The theme for the fundraising banquet is "Building Dreams Into a
Reality." A highlight of the evening will be Rivers himself walking
with his prosthetic legs for the first time in a public setting.
Rivers explained the banquet will be his first time walking "for any
distance" with his prosthetic legs and the first he has walked on the
artificial limbs in public.
"A lot of people don´t see me walking," Rivers said. "Out in the
public I haven´t taken the initiative to do it."
But he has practiced with his physical therapist and done some
walking at home.
