via the Houston Chronicle:

SAN ANTONIO - Capt. William Lyles slowly makes his way down a
carpeted stairway, carefully planting one sneaker firmly on the floor
before taking another step.

This move takes about a second for a person who has legs. But for
Lyles, a double amputee using a pair of prosthetic knees run by
microprocessors, sensors and a gyroscope, it requires serious
concentration and a full minute to walk down 12 steps.

A Green Beret, Lyles embodies the spirit of amputees at Fort Sam
Houston's Center for the Intrepid as they battle to recover from
their injuries, often finding inventive new ways of doing things they
once took for granted. Yet he also epitomizes a grim and
unanticipated toll of today's insurgent wars.
