Subject: Affirmative Action

Hey there WACers! This is Sarah your, student senator, trying to pass
along information about the highly debated issue of affirmative action. I
am sending you all the exact resolution that was proposed to senate so
that you know precisely what it says......

WHEREAS, numerous studies show that affirmative action policies have led
to greater opportunities for the economically disadvantaged, women, as
well as racial/ethnic minorities; and

WHEREAS, empirical research has shown that equal opportunity programs in
higher education are accomplishing their goals of enhancing diversity and
thus increasing academic excellence within the intellectual environment;
and

WHEREAS, negative notions of racial and gender ideology remain in society;
and

WHEREAS, analysis shows that institutional racism and sexism continue to
prevail in higher eduaction; and

WHEREAS, the University of Washington has established a long and proud
history in support of affirmative action programs

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF
WASHINGTON:

THAT, the ASUW Student Senate strongly supports affirmative action
oriented programs and policies.

THAT, we support the efforts of the UW Board of Regents, the
asministration, the facutly, and the UW Alumni Association in continuing
to pursue the goal of cultural and racial diversity in the UW student
body.

Sooooo....now that you've seen that e-mail me to let me know what you
think, how I should vote, or with any ideas of amendments.

Thanks ya'll.

Sarah
