Series (one week) and a Master Criminal Series as part of the Latenite
program. There are some seats, so feel free to bring a cozy pillow and
take in a great night of film.

The Phantom Chariot
Victor Sjostrom (1920) 89 min.
Sjostrom wrote and stars in this critically acclaimed tale following an
old legend that whomever should die on New Years Day will be forced to
drive the carriage of the dead. With Ferdinand Zecca’s THE RED SPECTRE
(1903).

The Crazy Ray
Rene Clair (1923) 60 min.
In Clair’s debut feature, a crazed inventor paralyzes Paris with a
powerful ray, while the mysteriously unaffected Eiffel Tower night
watchman attempts to thwart his plan. Plays with Emile Cohl’s THE MAN IN
THE MOON (1909).

The Cat And The Canary
Paul Leni (1927) 70 min.
Generally credited as the first Gothic horror masterpiece, this early
Haunted House picture features stunning sets, unusual effects, and a

ECLIPSE (1903).

The Leaves from Satan’s Book
Carl Dreyer (1921)
The second film from the director of THE PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC,
influenced by INTOLERANCE in structure, and told as an episodic account
of the devil’s temptations through the ages. Plays with THE DEVIL,
starring DW Griffith.

Zvenigora
A. Dovzhenko  (1928) 73 min.
A late masterpiece from one of the silent Soviet pioneers.  Preferring
dream-like imagery and allegorical narratives, ZVENIGORA follows a
mystical search over several generations for a fabled, hidden treasure. 
Plays with Harold Lloyd’s THE CINEMA DIRECTOR.

Die Nibelungen
Fritz Lang (1923-4)
Fritz Lang’s epic telling of the Nibelungen saga, told in two parts,
SIEGFRIED (@ 7pm) & KRIEMHILD’S REVENGE (@ 9pm).  Completed two years
before METROPOLIS, this epic easily marks one of the finest achievements
of the cinema.

The “other” version of the beloved classic, starring Olvier Hardy as the

criminal passions of a master of disguise and his equally cunning
nemesis, and ingenious detective who intends to put the fugitive behind

officer’s pursuit of a thief.
