LA VIE has nothing to do with Jesus, and is one of France's best (and
most shocking) debut features of the year as well as one of the
most-admired foreign picks from this year's SIFF. John Hartl of the
Seattle Times calls LA VIE DE JESUS "...an almost frighteningly
well-cast portrait of bored, restless, insatiable youth that provides no
clear answers." Unrated, with explicit sex and some violence.

THE GRAND ILLUSION'S HORROR FILM SERIES!

FRIDAY, OCT. 16
BEGOTTEN
w/ Special Guest
E. Elias Merhige
Sponsored by BEDAZZLED DISCS
Plays @ 5, 7, &9pm
(Director presents at 7&9pm shows only)
Opening the Grand Illusions Horror Series is a film which does not
exactly fit the Horror genre, but certainly is the most successful at
recalling its roots. BEGOTTEN is a feature length (78 min) experimental
film by filmmaker, performance artist, and painter
E. Elias Merhige, who will present his work in person at the cinema on
Friday, October
16th.
An extreme and terrifying experimental film, BEGOTTEN tells the story of
a mother and sons odyssey in a brutal land. Director Elias Merhige is
a technical mad scientist. Rephotographing the film one frame at a time
using specially invented photographic
techniques the result is a primitive and apocalyptic looking tale of
grotesque and intriguing events. The mythical characters, sans
dialogue, engage in primal behavior including self-disembowellment and
human sacrifice in a fascinating, violent aria of death and life.
Influenced by Greek mythology, Aboriginal art, and painters such as
Bosch and Goya, Mr. Merhige thoroughly destroys all conceptions of what
filmaking is aboutin every wayand makes leaps into unknown territories
of the medium most seem to have forgotten. Artists must behave like
archaeologists if the guts of visionary filmmaking
can happen. [They] will have to return to the depths of the collective
unknon to find out what were all about, says Merhige.
A brilliant and unique acheivement, BEGOTTEN is certainly not for all
tastes. However, the film has won considerable admiration from critics
and filmmakers worldwide. Director Merhige has since created the videos
and designed the sets for Goth-Star Marilyn Manson and continues his
work in film.
PLEASE NOTE:
WORKSHOP w/ E. ELIAS MERHIGE: THE SUBCONSCIOUS MUSE
In addition, E. Elias Merhige will be teaching a weekend NEW MASTER
CLASS at WigglyWorld Studios on Saturday, October 17th & Sunday the
18th. The workshop is aimed at theatre and film artists who are
interested in experimental performance and the nature of the creative
process. Elias will lead the class in working intensively with
actors and images to bring ideas out into the open, exploring the
passage from the subconscious to the conscious. A must for creative
filmakers, multi-media & theatre directors interested in producing
experimental work. Call Jamie @ (206) 329-2629 or
